The Japanese national flower is the Sakura さくら or the Cherry Blossom. The Sakura symbolises the duality of the human experience of life and death, beauty and violence. As they bloom during the spring it represents new life and the vibrancy of living. Simultaneously, the cherry blossoms are known to have a short life and the blossoms start to fall not long after they bloom. This is a reminder that life is beautiful but momentary. Cherry Blossoms in history have been associated with the Samurai, the Sakura representing their vibrant, courageous lives and falling petals represent their swift death on the battlefield.

The writing featured is a popular folk song named “Sakura Sakura” which has its origins in the Edo period. This is a line taken from the song and it reads:

Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms,
In fields, mountains and villages
As far as the eye can see.

This song is usually sung at international settings to represent Japan.
