The Chinese national flower is the Mei-Hua 梅花 Plum Blossom (or its recently disputed whether it should be the Peony). The Plum Blossom symbolises the ending of winter into spring. Spring being a very important season in Chinese traditional culture as it’s the start of a new beginning. Also ‘Chinese New Year” in Chinese is actually called “spring festival”. The Plum blossom also symbolises hope and perseverance as they tend to bloom during the end of winter. Their pink/reddish petals in the cold weather signal a hope for a brighter future, or beauty in the harshest of circumstances.
The writing is a poem featured is from the Tang Dynasty Poet Wang Wei (699-659AD) called the ‘Winter Plum Blossom’ which reads in English:
You, who came from my hometown,
can surely tell me hometown news.
The day you left, before the silk-curtained window,
Had the plum opened a winter blossom?
The meaning behind the poem has many interpretations, one being that he was describing a love which is lost or left abruptly unable to stay and their stay being too short lived.
